Burberry
Quintessentially British, Burberry was founded on 1856 in Basingstoke creating high quality outerwear which lead to its iconic trench coat designs. By the 1870s, Burberry has become a notable brand for outerwear and the 1880s led to the introduction of the gabardine which is a water-resistant and resilient material for outerwear. It is with these innovations that we have come to recognize Burberry nowadays as an iconic British brand. The company provided coats for the military and so the military element has become an important part of its sartorial ethos.

Reinventing British fashion
In the 20th century, Burberry has become even more popular especially in the 1970s where it was considered as part of the casual “uniform” of the British, used many high profile personalities. The popularity of the brand has become even mainstream with advertisements in top magazine publications such as Esquire, Harper's Bazaar and even Vogue. From the 80s to the 90s up to the 21st century Burberry has strengthened its market appeal by utilizing popular British models like Lily Donaldson, Kate Moss, Agyness Deyn and Jourdan Dunn. Emma Watson was also the face if the brand's main line, Burberry Prorsum for 2 seasons. Its perfume line is also advertised by Victoria Secret Model and actress Rosie Huntington Whitely.

The Man behind the Trench
Christopher Bailey is a man with a vision and a resume proving that his skills are never to be underestimated. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Bailey worked as a womenswear designer at Donna Karan before working as a senior women's wear designer for 5 years. In 2001, Bailey was given the role of creative director of Burberry before overseeing the entire creative operations as the Chief Creative Director. Under his reign, the brand was transformed from cool to ultra cool, creating easily identifiable designs reinvented season after season while keeping the Burberry legacy strong: military elements, gabardine, outerwear, the trench and others, often transformed to Rock star, jet-setting, uber-glamorous clothes for the modern wayfarer.

An Iconic brand
Burberry has become a global brand, spanning Europe, North America, and Asia, with high tech stores and incredibly elaborate runway shows, the direction of Burberry has become stronger than ever, appealing to a massive population. Their coats, as elaborate and luxurious than the other, transformed by the hands of their artisans working under the brand for several years already.

Burberry is notable for their iconic check that was created way back in the 1920s as lining for their trench coats. Nowadays, the checks were utilized for numerous other ways including bags, ready-to wear, and outer wear. Its logo, a knight on a horse, has kept its dignity over the years as the brand keeps moving forward, as its proprietor wanted the company to do. With Christopher Bailey at the helm of this quintessentially British yet globally recognized brand, we are seeing a lot more wearing the brand's trenches and jackets and partying on studded dresses and shirts, imbibing the new image of British Fashion.
